SOCIAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Summer Food Distribution Needs: The Social Outreach Committee is in need of the following food items to continue feeding needy families in our community during the summer months: tuna, pasta and pasta sauce, cereal, rice, beans (e.g. pinto beans in bags) and soups. There are baskets at each of the doors of the Church for these donations. Our summer food distribution dates are: July 2, August 6 and September 10. Thank you for your generosity. RCIA

Save the Date: If you know of a Catholic who has been away from the Church, a friend, neighbor or co-worker who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church invite them to the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program which will begin September 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Knecht Conference Room. If you are a practicing Catholic but would like to know more about your faith in order to better understand it and better defend you are also invited to attend.


RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION FOR NEW KINDERGARTEN OR 1ST GRADE STUDENTS AND THOSE NEW TO THE PARISH: We are now accepting registrations for new students. Classes are held on Tuesdays. You may choose either an Afternoon Session(4:15-5:45PM) or an Evening Session (7:00-8:15PM). Please call 703-533-1182 x104 to make an appointment. You will need a baptismal certificate, if you child was not baptized at St. James; a check or cash for tuition ($75.00 for one child or $100.00 for two or more children); and if your child was in a Catholic school or Religious Education Program previously – a letter from that school.

THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SACRAMENT PREPARATION AT ST. JAMES FOR PENANCE, EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION is a two year program. For the 2010-2011 school year, if you hve a 2nd grader who was not enrolled in a Religious Education program or Catholic school for Gr. 1, they will be placed in 1st level for 2010-2011 and will receive Penance and Eucharist in 2011-2012. If you have an 8th grader who was not enrolled in a 7th grade Confirmation Religious Education Program or Catholic school, they will be placed in 7th level for 2010-2011 and will receive Confirmation in 2011-2012.

Our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) is in need of volunteers as catechists and assistants on every level. Classes meet on Tuesday, afternoon and evening, beginning in the Fall. Training will be available for anyone who is able to join us. This is a serious commitment of time. Please pray over this and if you feel called to this ministry, please call S. Joyce Bell @ 703-532-8815X126 to schedule an initial interview.

Important Dates in Youth Ministry

  • July 24-30: WorkCamp 2010
  • August 6: Diocesan Day at Kings Dominion
  • August 9: Mass Appeal Bible Study: 6-8 pm.
  • August 11: Open Gym
  • August 12: Mini-Golf at Upton Hill Park 2pm– 5pm

Lunch Bunch: Come to noon mass, then come out to lunch with Em. We can’t pay for your lunch, so bring a few bucks. Get fed at the altar, then feed your belly! Join us on August 3 ! You pick where we go.

DIOCESAN DAY AT KINGS DOMINION: Come join in the fun at Kings Dominion on August 6th! The diocese will come together for a day at the Park. We start the day with mass and then spend the rest having an awesome time at the Park. Cost is $35 (includes ticket) plus the cost of meals at the park. We will be meeting at St. James at 6:45 am and will return around midnight. Chaperones are needed for the day. Please RSVP to Em by August 3.

OPEN GYM: Every other Wednesday night this summer, youth ministry will be hosting “open gym” from 7-9 pm. Come out and play basketball, Frisbee, whatever your heart desires. Please bring your own basketball etc. Our next open gym will be August 11.

World Youth Day: If you are interested in attending World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain next summer and have not contacted Em, in the Office of Youth Ministry, please do so soon to get caught up on payments and information. Please RSVP by July 30th. World Youth Day is an international gathering of youth who come together every few years to celebrate their faith withour Pope during a pilgrimage to a particularly secular county. We can still take a few more pilgrims. Bishop Loverde is leading our diocesan pilgrims for 2011!

Mass Appeal Bible Study: Truth. Beauty. Sacrifice. Fall in Love with the mass through this weekly Bible Study starting on August 9th. Meet in Em’s office at 6 pm. It’ll be worth it!
